Kyukyodo
Founded in 1663 in Kyoto as an apothecary, Kyukyodo began crafting incense when it discovered that the herbs and aromatics of pharmacy were the very same materials used in fine fragrance. In 1877, the house was formally entrusted — by Imperial decree — with the complete secret formulas of Japan's Heian court (794–1185) incenses: a ceremonial tradition preserved for over 900 years. A former purveyor to the Imperial Household, Kyukyodo remains the living custodian of Japan's most ancient fragrance lineage.
