The stone garden is the most abstract form of karesansui, the dry landscape garden, in which mountains and water are expressed using nothing but white sand, pebbles and rocks. The skilful placement of stones and the raked patterns in the sand condense a vast landscape and symbolise the Zen view of nature and the universe. Such gardens have long served as places for contemplation and seated meditation: an embodiment of wabi, and a discipline for the mind.
