Osagawa Nisaburo Shoten Jokoban Incense Clock Burner for Powder Trails

The jokoban is an incense tool used for trail burning (nenko), the traditional way of burning incense in a long incense burner or a jokoban. A layer of powdered incense is spread over the ash, and granulated incense or finely chopped agarwood is placed on top, so that the incense keeps burning for a long time.

This 5-sun (15.3 cm) jokoban is finished in glossy black lacquer. Fill the top tray with ash and level it, use a trail stencil to form a geometric groove, fill it with an even layer of powdered incense and light one end. Because the incense burns at a steady pace, the length burned tells the time, and placing different scents along the trail lets you follow the passing of time by fragrance. This is why the jokoban is also known as an incense clock.

Use together with the trail stencil set (spiral or wave pattern), powdered incense and incense burner ash, each sold separately.

How to use (see our step-by-step guide with photos)
Smooth the ash in the jokoban with the leveling board, then flatten it with the ash press. Place the stencil in the center, pour powdered incense into the grooves and level it evenly with the board. Fit the stencil press into the stencil, press it in slightly, and lift the stencil and stencil press straight up together to leave the pattern on the ash. Light one end with a short piece of incense stick or a long-nosed lighter, and the incense burns along the trail from that end.
