Description
When people think of incense from Mount Kōya, they think of Kōya Reikō.
Widely used at temples including Kongōbu-ji, the head temple of Kōyasan, this incense is prepared from carefully selected natural aromatics based on the traditional Buddhist “Five Fragrances” recorded in ancient Indian scriptures: agarwood, sandalwood, clove, borneol, and turmeric, along with other natural fragrance materials.
Each stick is 13 cm long, making it suitable for daily offerings and home altar use while preserving a traditional temple-style presence.
The fragrance is calm and dignified, reminiscent of historic temples—deep, gentle, and understated. Because only natural aromatic ingredients are used, it is also a reassuring choice for those who prefer to avoid perfume-like scents.
When lit, it produces a clean, steady white smoke. As this is a fuller-smoke style incense, ventilation is recommended in smaller or enclosed spaces.
Enjoy at home the same authentic incense traditionally used at Kōyasan temples, carrying forward the classical Buddhist incense tradition.
