When people think of incense from Mount Kōya, they think of Kōya Reikō.

Widely used at temples including Kongōbu-ji, the head temple of Kōyasan, this incense is carefully prepared from selected natural aromatics based on the traditional Buddhist “Five Fragrances” recorded in ancient Indian scriptures: agarwood, sandalwood, clove, borneol, and turmeric, along with other natural fragrance materials.

Each stick is 8 cm long, making it suitable for daily offerings and regular use at the home altar. It is especially appropriate for offerings to the Buddha and for honoring ancestors.

The fragrance is calm and dignified, reminiscent of traditional temples—gentle, deep, and understated. Because only natural aromatic ingredients are used, it is also a reassuring choice for those who prefer to avoid perfume-like scents.

When lit, it produces a clean, steady white smoke. As this is a fuller-smoke style incense, ventilation is recommended in smaller or enclosed spaces.
